Destination Portraits
| Enjoy these non-portrait images, one of which is a Claude Monet original. Appreciate and be inspired by whatever magnificent views abound.Conceptually, my “studio” includes nearly any spot on planet Earth. During my tenure as a portrait artist I’ve had wonderful opportunities to venture to distant and fascinating locations. Where is your preferred or fantasy destination, across an ocean or perhaps a neighboring state? Regardless, no place is too far for me to photograph you there. You’ve only one life here so why not go for it? Let me make a portrait of you in your personal “paradise”.
I had a surprisingly strong affinity with northern Italy – feeling totally at home there. From our seaside base lodging in Rappollo, Portofino was a mere jaunt away and a great region to explore. I climbed the steep stone steps of the mountain with several pounds of photographic equipment. I hiked until reaching a lovely view from which to photograph the famous port. There were gated homes around me and one kind resident, graciously allowed me onto his property. From this vantage point, the ancient port city, unfolded in splendor, the very vision I’d hoped for. It was absolute perfection. The sun was setting, the light was warm and golden and the water placid. The resident gentleman later informed me that in this very spot I stood, other artists, (some famous and not) had likewise paused to secure their renditions of Portofino centuries ago. |
Following a circular trail through the regions of France was an amazing and memorable journey. I fell immediately in love with Monet’s Garden in Giverney. The day we arrived at Monet’s Garden, we failed to realize it was to close in an hour and besides, the sun was still far too high in the sky to yield the beautiful lighting we wanted for photographing. Being at wit’s end, after traveling several hours to get there and not knowing if and when we’d be there again, we related our story, (in our best French phrasing) to the garden staff. They generously agreed to “lock” us in the garden after hours – showing us a “secret” way out when we were ready to leave… encouraging us to remain as long as we wished. As we settled into the stillness of the garden, watching the sun descend in the sky, we felt surrounded by Monet’s presence. It was a surreal experience I will never forget.Prague was a captivating place to photograph. The city is gorgeous. Much of the old architecture remains intact, having been spared the devastation of any major war. Below is a print I made of Europe’s oldest bridge, the Charles Bridge. I enjoyed working with a family there and hearing their vivid tales of growing up living in Prague.
